Here is the uncomfortable finding behind most critical-thinking courses: the skill is largely domain-specific. You cannot evaluate a claim about monetary policy, vaccine trials, or database architecture if you know nothing about monetary policy, vaccines, or databases — no amount of fallacy vocabulary substitutes for the missing knowledge. What does transfer is a short list of moves: reconstruct an argument, check a base rate, notice a missing denominator, state what would change your mind. That transferable core is about 120 hours of real work, and the rest of critical thinking is just learning things.

Take formal logic seriously, then put it down

Propositional logic, conditionals, quantifiers, and enough proof work that you stop mishandling "if-then" statements — the confusion between a conditional and its converse causes a remarkable share of everyday reasoning errors. Learn evidence and probability, not just logic

Base rates, sample size, selection effects, regression to the mean, correlation versus causation, and how to update a belief when new evidence arrives. Study cognitive bias — and what debiasing research found

Learn the major biases, then learn the deflating result: awareness of a bias does very little to remove it. Write against real opposition

Memorizing a list of logical fallacies

Fallacy vocabulary tends to make people worse arguers, because naming a move feels like refuting it and most real arguments do not commit textbook fallacies cleanly. Replace fallacy-spotting with reconstruction: write the opposing argument as numbered premises, then say precisely which premise you reject and why. If you cannot name the premise, you do not yet have an objection.

Believing that knowing about biases removes them

The debiasing literature is fairly clear that awareness alone changes little — people who can define confirmation bias still exhibit it. Use structural fixes instead: before you look at the evidence, write down what result would change your mind; assign a person to argue the other side; reach for the base rate before the story. Procedures beat vigilance.

Evaluating claims in fields you know nothing about

If you cannot state the mainstream position in a field and the two strongest objections to it, you are not evaluating the argument — you are reacting to its style. Either spend twenty hours acquiring the domain basics, or switch to the honest alternative: assess the source's track record, incentives, and whether the field has real error correction, and hold your conclusion loosely.

Confusing skepticism with contrarianism

Reflexively doubting the consensus is not calibration, it is a different bias with better branding. Good reasoners update toward strong evidence more often than away from it, and their track record shows it. Test yourself by logging predictions — if your contrarian calls resolve wrong more often than your conventional ones, that is data about you, not about the establishment.

Never writing anything down

Memory rewrites your past reasoning to match the outcome, so unrecorded thinking cannot be evaluated. Keep a decision journal: the choice, your reasoning, your confidence as a number, and what you expected to happen. Review it quarterly. This one habit produces more improvement than any course, and almost nobody does it.
