How to Learn Psychology
Psychology is one of the easiest subjects to start on your own and one of the easiest to learn badly, because the popular version of it — the TED talks, the airport paperbacks, the study that "proved" willpower is a muscle — is substantially out of date. A large share of the famous findings from psychology's confident decades did not survive replication, so the first skill is not memorizing effects but checking them. Budget roughly 210 hours for a real foundation across biological, cognitive, social, developmental, and clinical psychology. The hard part is not the material; it is unlearning the confident claims already in your head.

Start with methods, not findings
Experimental design, control groups, random assignment, sampling, effect sizes, and what a p-value does and does not say. Nearly every reader who skips this ends up collecting striking results they cannot evaluate. Twenty-five hours here is what separates studying psychology from consuming it.
Learn the brain behind the behavior
Neurons, neurotransmitters, the major structures, and — most usefully — the logic of how researchers infer function from lesions, imaging, and stimulation. You need enough biology to know why "this lights up on an fMRI" is weak evidence for almost any interesting psychological claim.
Learning, conditioning, and memory
Classical and operant conditioning, reinforcement schedules, working versus long-term memory, encoding, retrieval, forgetting, and the spacing and testing effects. This is the most replicated, most practically useful part of the field, and it doubles as the science of how you should be studying everything else.
Cognition, judgment, and decision-making
Attention, perception, language, reasoning, heuristics and biases. Read the original Kahneman and Tversky work alongside the modern critiques rather than the pop summaries — several textbook demonstrations here shrank considerably under replication, and knowing which is part of knowing the material.
Emotion, motivation, and personality
Appraisal theories of emotion, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and the Big Five as the one personality framework with real predictive validity. Notice which popular instruments — type-based personality tests especially — have almost none, and why the difference is a measurement problem rather than a matter of taste.
Social and developmental psychology
Conformity, obedience, group dynamics, stereotyping, attachment, moral development, and how cognition changes across a lifespan. This is also where psychology's most-cited studies live and where the replication record is roughest, so treat every famous demonstration as a claim to verify rather than a fact to file.
Clinical psychology and what therapy actually does
How disorders are classified, why the DSM is a working manual rather than a description of natural kinds, and what the outcome literature says about CBT, exposure, medication, and the therapeutic alliance. Studying this is not the same as being qualified to practice it, and the gap is licensure, supervision, and thousands of hours.
Apply it to one real domain
Pick a place you actually operate — your own studying, a team you manage, a product you design, a classroom — and run the findings against reality. Applied psychology is where you discover which effects are large enough to notice outside a lab, which is a lesson no reading gives you.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Collecting named effects without checking whether they replicated
Before you file any famous finding as true, search the effect name plus "replication" and look for the large multi-lab attempts — the Open Science Collaboration's 2015 project and the Many Labs studies are the obvious first stop. Keep two running lists: robust and contested. Ego depletion, social priming, power posing, and the marshmallow test all belong on the second list, and knowing that is a bigger sign of literacy than reciting the original results.
Studying psychology as a way to fix yourself
Self-diagnosis from a textbook is unreliable, and research psychology answers questions about populations, not about you. Split the two goals explicitly: use clinical reading to understand what treatments do and how they were tested, and handle your own situation through a clinician. If your motivation is entirely personal, start with the learning-and-memory and emotion material, which actually pays out at the individual level.
Reading the abstract and skipping the method
Read every paper in this order: method, sample, effect size, then abstract. Most overhyped psychology reduces to a correlational design reported in causal language, or a real effect measured in 40 undergraduates. Two questions catch the majority of it — what exactly was manipulated, and how many people were in each cell.
Skipping statistics because it looks like math homework
You do not need to compute anything; you need to read. Roughly ten focused hours on effect size, confidence intervals, statistical power, p-hacking, and preregistration will let you evaluate almost any paper you meet. Skipping it means every study is as persuasive as its press release.
Generalizing from WEIRD samples without noticing
An enormous share of the classic literature was run on Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic undergraduates, and several "human universals" turned out to be American-college-student universals. Make the sample description a mandatory read, and when a claim is about human nature, ask whether it was ever tested outside one country.
