Medical Scientist

You design and run experiments about human disease — in a lab, a clinic, or both. You write the protocol, generate data, interpret it, and publish or file it. In biotech and pharma the same skills run clinical trials and drug development. Most experiments fail, which is the method working.

What does a Medical Scientist do?

A day in the life

  • Set up an assay, then wait three days for it to read out.
  • Find a failed control and lose a week of results.
  • Argue with a collaborator about whether the effect survives multiple comparisons.
  • Train a new technician on a protocol only you can run.
  • Write a grant renewal against data that is not quite finished.

How to become a Medical Scientist

  1. 1

Get into a lab as an undergraduate

Bench time and a recommendation decide graduate admissions more than grades do.

  2. 2

Earn a PhD, an MD, or both

Five to seven years learning to ask an answerable question.

  3. 3

Do a postdoc, or skip it for industry

Academia expects one. Biotech increasingly hires straight out of the PhD.

  4. 4

Build a technique nobody else has

Sequencing, imaging, a model organism, a trial design. Specificity is what hires.

  5. 5

Choose academia, biotech, or clinical research

Each has different funding, pace, and definitions of a good year.
